Please keep its age in mind while reading.<\/div><p>I&#8217;ve said it before and I&#8217;ll say it again: <strong>there are a heckuvalot of tools out there.<\/strong>  Here&#8217;s what&#8217;s working for me right now:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/en-US\/thunderbird\/\">Thunderbird<\/a> &#8211; Managing my email (loving: filters, folders)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/en-US\/firefox\/\">Firefox<\/a> &#8211; Browsing the web (loving: tabs, the <a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/60\">web developer extension<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordpress.org\">WordPress<\/a> &#8211; This blog (loving: admin panel, active community of developers)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/reader\">Google Reader<\/a> &#8211; Blog-reading (loving: tags\/folders, shortcut keys, starring)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ma.gnolia.com\">Ma.gnolia<\/a> &#8211; Collecting miscellaneous links (loving: bookmarklet, preview thumbnails)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\">LiveJournal<\/a> &#8211; Keeping track of friends (loving: filters, threaded comments)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\">Flickr<\/a> &#8211; Sharing photos (loving: tag searches)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\">Twitter<\/a> &#8211; Microblogging and keeping track of tech pals (loving: SMS integration, <a href=\"http:\/\/iconfactory.com\/software\/twitterrific\">Twitterrific<\/a>, the fact that I can display my most recent tweet at the top of this blog)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.last.fm\">Last.fm<\/a> &#8211; Listening to music (loving: discovering new music that I actually appreciate)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialtext.com\">SocialText<\/a> &#8211; Keeping track of work notes (loving: separated workspaces, useful text editor)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\">LinkedIn<\/a> &#8211; Professional networking (loving: the reviews people have left for me there ::blushes::)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greencine.com\">GreenCine<\/a> &#8211; Keeping my apartment stocked with good movies (loving: the independent film selection, not giving money to NetFlix)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/homepage.mac.com\/estebanuribe\/software\/eggtimer.html\">EggTimer<\/a> &#8211; Timed reminders (loving: the &#8220;repeat alarm&#8221; feature, for jumping-jack breaks every ten minutes during bust-ass sessions.  seriously.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/electricsheep.org\/\">Electric Sheep<\/a> &#8211; Screensaver (loving: being continually surprised and impressed)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/skype.com\">Skype<\/a> &#8211; Group chats (loving: conversation history, decent emoticons)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You&#8217;ll notice that I didn&#8217;t name Facebook, Gmail, or Google Docs &#8212; the current darlings of the web tool landscape. I have accounts with all of them, but to be totally honest I don&#8217;t have much use for any of them right now.  And I&#8217;m okay with that.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re curious about my hardware, here&#8217;s what I keep nearby:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A dented and refurbished (yet sticker-free!) 15&#8243; Mac PowerBook G4 Laptop (in a backpack that does <em>not<\/em> look like a laptop bag).<\/li>\n<li>30 GB ipod (with cheap-ass black earbuds that do <em>not<\/em> look like they&#8217;re coming out of an ipod)<\/li>\n<li>Treo 650 (which is not meeting my needs as well as I&#8217;d like, but I just had it replaced, and I&#8217;m not ready to upgrade)<\/li>\n<li>Whiteboards  &#8211; Capturing ideas, organizing quick lists, brainstorming, doodling<\/li>\n<li>A Moleskin 1-page-per-day calendar notebook &#8211; Recording major tasks, goals, and hours worked each day<\/li>\n<li>A regular lined Moleskin notebook &#8211; All other notes, journaling, lists, and spontaneous poetry<\/li>\n<li>My Roomba &#8211; Vacuuming (loving: automated scheduling, how incredibly freaking adorable it is)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The missing piece for me right now is a camera (mine recently bit the dust), but I&#8217;ve already put in a good word with Santa on that one.<\/p>\n<p>This post was inspired by <a href=\"http:\/\/webworkerdaily.com\/2007\/12\/07\/mostly-free-resources-for-the-web-worker-who-works-on-the-web\/\">Web Worker Daily&#8217;s list<\/a> today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Heads up, this content is 18 years old.
