Please keep its age in mind while reading.<\/div><p><strong>The Experiment&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\nPeople throw around a lot of names at conferences; sometimes you recognize them, sometimes you don&#8217;t.  I went into my week at <a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/interactive\/\">SXSWi 2007<\/a> with a mission: to write down every name that was dropped on me (see my pre-trip mission statement, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarahdopp.com\/blog\/?p=266\">Namedropping 2.0<\/a>, for the back story and the rules).<\/p>\n<p>The end result, in theory, would be a list of everyone who is Internet Famous in my spheres of interest as of SXSWi 2007.  This is, of course, an oversimplification, an overdramatization, and a gross generalization, but hey, let&#8217;s look at the list anyway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Disclaimer&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>This project was truly <strong>impossible<\/strong> and this list is incomplete.  For many, many reasons I know I&#8217;ve left off significant people whose names were dropped at the conference.  It&#8217;s really not on purpose &#8212; I just couldn&#8217;t keep up.  So I invite you now to review the list and comment below with your own additions to it.  Who is Internet Famous to you?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Results&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/jayallen.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jay Allen<\/a> &#8211;  Product Manager for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sixapart.com\/movabletype\/\">Movable Type<\/a> and blogosphere expert.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dooce.com\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Armstrong<\/a> &#8211;  Personal blogging pioneer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Arrington<\/a> &#8211; aka Techcrunch.  Internet company profiler.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/laughingsquid.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scott Beale<\/a> &#8211;  Aka Laughing Squid.  Tech event photographer and blogger.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.benkler.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yochai Benkler<\/a> &#8211;  Yale Law Professor and open-source\/blogosphere commentator.  Coined the term &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commons-based_peer_production\">commons based peer production<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.danah.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">danah boyd<\/a> &#8211;  Social media researcher and blogger (see also: my personal idol and hero).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/susiebright.blogs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Susie Bright<\/a> &#8211;  Sex blogger and well-published writer and editor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.calacanis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Calacanis<\/a> &#8211;  Tech entrepreneur blogger.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emilychang.com\" target=\"_blank\">Emily Chang<\/a> &#8211;  Strategic interactive designer and editor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emilychang.com\/go\/ehub\/\" target=\"_blank\">eHub<\/a> &#8212; a database of Web 2.0 tools.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frank_Chu\" target=\"_blank\">Frank Chu<\/a> &#8211;  A guy who lives in San Francisco and walks around with gibberish protesting signs and has an entire bar named after him. (Also, at the time of this writing, the victim of a <a href=\"http:\/\/headrush.typepad.com\/creating_passionate_users\/2007\/03\/as_i_type_this_.html#comments\" target=\"_blank\">major scandal involving anonymous death threats<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lawgeek.typepad.com\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Schultz<\/a> &#8211;  Law blogger and staff attorney at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">EFF<\/a> &#8212; a resource for the protection of legal rights in the digital world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stallman.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Stallman<\/a> &#8211;  Free software activist (&#8220;Free as in Freedom&#8221;), Founder of GNU Project and Free Software Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bruce_Sterling\" target=\"_blank\">Bruce Sterling<\/a> &#8211;  Science fiction author and tech opinionist.  (is <em>opinionist<\/em> a word?  if not, i think Bruce Sterling necessitates its coinage.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/surfette.typepad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lisa Stone<\/a> &#8211;  Co-founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogher.org\">BlogHer<\/a> &#8212; a blogging network and conference with an emphasis on women.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ginatrapani.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gina Trapani<\/a> &#8211;  Editor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifehacker.com\" target=\"_blank\">Lifehacker<\/a>, a geek productivity tips blog.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dave_Winer\" target=\"_blank\">Dave Winer<\/a> &#8211;  The man who pioneered and evangelized RSS (thus opening a big door to the connected blogosphere as we know it today).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Will_Wright\" target=\"_blank\">Will Wright<\/a> &#8211;  Game designer.  He created SimCity &#8212; the reason you failed out of college.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zeldman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Zeldman<\/a> &#8211;  Publisher of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alistapart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">A List Apart<\/a>, one of the primary online publications guiding  web development standards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Conclusions&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\nWe&#8217;re inundated with talented and brilliant minds, and the list above represents just a small handful of them.  But let&#8217;s be real here: it&#8217;s not so much a big deal to be famous on the Internet.   Anyone can do it.  Well, sort of.  You just need to be persistently and flagrantly useful, naked, loud, or rich.<\/p>\n<p>To put all this in perspective, allow me to direct you to A-List Blogger Jason Calacanis&#8217; poignant rant:  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calacanis.com\/2007\/03\/19\/more-proof-that-there-is-no-a-list-or-at-least-if-there-is-it\/\">More proof that that there is no A list (or at least, if there is, it means NOTHING!)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may now return to your regularly scheduled surfing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Heads up, this content is 19 years old.
